Mercedes-Benz has released over a dozen infotainment generations since the early 2000s, each with different capabilities, coding potential, and hardware requirements. Whether you are trying to activate CarPlay, update maps, or unlock the AMG menu, knowing your NTG system is the first step. This guide breaks down every major generation from NTG4.5 through the latest Gen20x, explaining what each can do and what you can code on it.

What Is NTG?

NTG stands for "New Telemetics Generation," Mercedes-Benz's internal naming convention for infotainment and telematics platforms. Each NTG generation represents a major hardware and software architecture change, affecting screen size, processing power, connectivity options, and the types of features that can be activated through coding.

Understanding your NTG system matters because coding capabilities, map update methods, and even the diagnostic tools required vary significantly between generations. A feature that is a simple code change on NTG5 may require SCN online parameterization on NTG7, or may not be available at all on NTG4.5.

NTG4.5 (2011–2015) — W204, W212, W221

NTG4.5 was the first generation to introduce the modern widescreen COMAND interface with 3D map rendering and internet connectivity. Found in the final years of the W204 C-Class, W212 E-Class, and W221 S-Class, it represented a major leap from the earlier NTG3.5 architecture.

Key features include COMAND Online with hard-drive navigation, Bluetooth audio streaming, and basic internet services. The system uses a physical controller with a rotary dial and buttons — no touch interface. Coding potential on NTG4.5 is limited compared to newer systems, but several useful features can still be activated: mirror folding, ambient lighting expansion, and AMG startup logo on compatible instrument clusters.

Map updates for NTG4.5 are still available but increasingly difficult to source. The system uses a DVD-based update method or USB depending on the exact revision. CarPlay and Android Auto are not supported on this generation due to hardware limitations.

NTG5*1 / NTG5*2 / NTG5.5 (2014–2021) — W205, W213, W222

NTG5 is where Mercedes coding really took off. This generation powers the W205 C-Class, W213 E-Class, W222 S-Class, and their SUV counterparts. It comes in three main flavors:

  • NTG5*1 — Entry-level system with a 7-inch or 8.4-inch screen, no touch, controller-based input.
  • NTG5*2 — Mid-range system with an 8.4-inch screen, optional touchpad controller, and enhanced graphics.
  • NTG5.5 — High-end system with a 12.3-inch widescreen display, full COMAND Online, and the most coding potential.

NTG5 systems support a wide range of codable features: AMG menu, CarPlay/Android Auto, Digital Light, ambient lighting, mirror folding, and more. Map updates are USB-based and require a PIN code. The system architecture is well-understood by the aftermarket, making NTG5 one of the most popular generations for feature activation.

NTG6 / MBUX Generation 1 (2018–2023) — W177, W247, W167

NTG6 marked the debut of MBUX — Mercedes-Benz User Experience — the company's first voice-controlled, AI-assisted infotainment platform. Found in the W177 A-Class, W247 B-Class, W167 GLE/GLS, and others, MBUX introduced a completely new interface with "Hey Mercedes" natural language processing, augmented reality navigation, and over-the-air update capability.

From a coding perspective, NTG6 is more complex than NTG5. Many features are now tied to Mercedes server-side licenses, meaning simple offline coding is no longer sufficient for features like CarPlay or certain driver assistance packages. SCN online coding is frequently required. However, the hardware is significantly more capable, supporting features like MBUX Interior Assistant (hand gesture control) and advanced voice commands that NTG5 could never handle.

Map updates on NTG6 can be performed over-the-air for connected vehicles, or via USB for others. The PIN code system remains in place for USB-based updates.

NTG7 / MBUX Generation 2 (2020–2025) — W223, W206, W214

NTG7, also known as MBUX Gen2, debuted in the W223 S-Class and quickly spread to the W206 C-Class, W214 E-Class, and their SUV variants. The most visible change is the "zero-layer" interface, which surfaces the most relevant functions without requiring menu diving. It also introduced biometric authentication (fingerprint scanner) and more sophisticated AI predictions.

Coding on NTG7 is the most restrictive of any generation so far. Mercedes has increasingly moved to a subscription and server-license model, where features are enabled through Mercedes backend systems rather than local coding. That said, many features can still be activated by professionals with the right tools and server access, including AMG Track Pace, enhanced ambient lighting, and certain driver assistance functions.

Map updates are primarily over-the-air, but USB-based updates with PIN codes are still supported for vehicles without active data connections. The hardware supports up to three displays (instrument cluster, central touchscreen, and passenger display) with independent content streams.

Gen20x / MBUX Generation 3 (2024+) — Latest S/E/C

Gen20x is the newest architecture, first appearing in the 2024 facelift S-Class and spreading to the latest E-Class and C-Class models. It represents a hardware refresh with faster processors, 5G connectivity, and even more integrated AI features. The interface is smoother, voice recognition is more natural, and the system can handle more simultaneous inputs.

Coding potential on Gen20x is still being explored by the aftermarket. Early indications suggest that Mercedes is continuing the trend of server-side feature control, making local coding more challenging. However, hardware-level features — like display configurations, lighting zones, and certain performance readouts — are expected to remain accessible to professional coders with updated tools.

For owners of Gen20x vehicles, we recommend checking with our team for the latest compatibility information, as the coding landscape evolves monthly.
